Melbourne has four distinct seasons (Refer to the Table Above). However, sometimes the seasons are not consistent and do not occur in the regular seasonal pattern. Therefore, it not unusual to have a summer day in the middle of winter or vice versa.
The weather in Melbourne is "unpredictable" as it often changes from one extreme to another. Melbourne is known as "having four seasons in one day". Probably the best clothes to wear are layers, that way you can peel clothes on or off as required. Overall, the temperatures are cool and mild averaging 20 degrees.
During the winter months the days are very cold and wet, and quite short as the daylight lasts for about 5 hours. It rarely snows in Australia except on the mountain alps and in Tasmania.
During the summer months we can experience scorching heat waves as high as 35 to 40 degrees which may last continuously for a few days. The sun in Melbourne is harsh and dry. Too much of the sun can be damaging as it can cause skin cancer. Therefore, people are strongly advised to "slip, slop, slap" with SPF 15+ suntan lotions, and encouraged to wear sunglasses and sun hats.
